BRITISH TRAVEL AWARDS 2009 WINNERS ANNOUNCED

THE 2009 BRITISH TRAVEL AWARDS in association with Lloyds TSB Cardnet, held on November 5th at Battersea Evolution London, saw over 900 travel industry professionals gather to celebrate the best domestic and international travel and leisure services. With over 70 categories spanning transport, cruise, hospitality, destinations and more, companies from across all travel sectors were honoured with the coveted gold and silver awards.

The British Travel Awards’ CEO, Lorraine Barnes Burton said: “The British Travel Awards are the largest arbiter of public opinion on travel and the only awards to include consumer votes.  Between July and September our media partners attracted over 100,000 members of the public to visit our website, first to nominate and then to vote for the best they have experienced. The votes were then verified by Deloitte, one of the world’s ‘big four’ auditors, to ensure their accuracy and integrity so we, our winners and the traveling public can be confident that our results offer the most accurate representation of consumer opinion on travel.”

Achieving these independently verified standards of excellence entitles each winner to use The British Travel Awards logo as a recognised ‘seal of approval’ as part of their printed and web-based marketing approach.

Sarah Munro, head of travel services, collected two awards for the Post Office, for ‘Best Travel Insurance Retailer’ and ‘Best Foreign Exchange/Travel Money Retailer’.

American Airlines was awarded ‘Airline of the Year’ by the BTA Academy of industry experts and Easy Jet collected the consumer voted ‘Best Economy Class Airline’ award.

Thomson and First Choice managed to scoop nine gold awards, whilst P&O Ferries walked away with three, including ‘Ferry Company of the Year’.

Thomas Cook collected the special ‘Sun Readers Favourite Large Package Holiday Company’ award, which was presented on stage by The Sun travel editor Lisa Minot.
