Things to do

Located within Sri Lanka’s ‘Coconut Triangle’, Negombo is a popular destination thanks to its close distance from the airport, its choice of upscale restaurants and luxury hotels and plenty of modern amenities. This former fishing village has plenty of character too, from the palm-thatched houses on the edge of the lagoon and its wooden canoes to the Catholic remnants from its former Portuguese rulers. Colourful churches full of painted ceilings and stained-glass windows are peppered around the place.

If you want to see more of the authentic culture, take a tuk-tuk to Angurukaramulla Temple, best known for its large Buddha statue. Or you can kick back at Negombo Beach where you can relax in the sun and watch the local fishermen bring in their catch. The beach is a long strip of sand that reaches from the main hotel area to the lagoon. Surrounded by mangroves and coconut trees, it’s a beautiful spot in its own right, but if you want to see more then head to one of the local dive schools. There are lots of opportunities for scuba diving amongst the wrecks and coral reefs. Or, if you prefer to keep your feet on dry land, take a walk around the tropical foliage and interesting trees at the Henarathgoda Botanical Gardens.

Top attractions

Get a real feel for Sri Lanka with a boat trip on the Dutch Canal, where you can take in the colourful fishing boats and might catch a glimpse of some of the local wildlife, including monkeys and tropical birds. The Negombo Lagoon is also a great place to see birds and animals, while enjoying a boat ride through the mangrove trees.

Other popular attractions include the aforementioned Angurukaramulla Temple, with a 6 metre long Buddha, dragon sculptures at the entrance and colourful murals, and the Guruge Park, a theme park with rides and exhibits.

Best restaurants

One of the best rated restaurants in Negombo is Lords Restaurant, which features a creative menu of fusion cuisine, using elements from both Western and Eastern dishes. It’s a little more pricey than some of the other local eateries, but worth it for a special night out. Another top spot is family-run Petit Restaurant, which does fresh seafood dishes well, in additional to a range of other Sri Lankan classics. Another favourite for seafood lovers is Tusker Restaurant, a very welcoming restaurant with a smart interior.
