What to do in Izmir?

Historical sites

Built in 1901 and located at the busy Konak Square is the historic clock tower which is 25 metres high and quite beautiful. The incredible Agora open-air museum features the remains of an ancient market and city centre. Atatürk Monument dedicated to the Turkish war of independence. Tarihi Asansör, located in the historical area, is the first and oldest lift, which takes you up to an observation deck and restaurant with stunning 360-degree views.

The Republic Tree monument is located in the centre of Gündoğdu Square. The ancient hilltop castle named Kadifekale sits on a hill with the same name and overlooks the city.

Religious buildings

There are several churches and cathedral all located close to one another in the historic part of the city; St Johns Cathedral, Saint Polycarpe Sen Polikarp, Aziz Polikarp's Church, Agia Fotini orthodox church, Aya Fotini Rum Ortodoks Kilisesi, Santa Maria, Yeni Doğuş Kilisesi, Meryem Ana Kilisesi, Myrna Sonsuz Yaşam Kilisesi Derneği, Dom Kilisesi, Church of St. Vukolos, Işık Kilisesi Alsancak, Alsancak Katolik Kilisesi, Izmir Resurrection Church and Alsancak Katolik Kilisesi Church Of Holy Rosary.

At the Konak square, you will find the beautiful Yali mosque, next to the Governor's mansion. Besides, other mosques include; Kestanepazarı mosque, Hisar mosque and T.C. Konak Müftülüğü İkiçeşmelik Camii mosque.

Museums

The archaeological museum is a chance to witness artefacts from around the gulf of Izmir including statues, tools and day-to-day living utensils, amongst other things. Ataturk Museum is also worth a visit, and if cars are what interests you, then you'll enjoy the Key museum with its extensive collection of vehicles and motorcycles. There is the History & Arts Museum for vintage coins and ancient artefacts and the İzmir Ethnography Museum for clothing and pottery from the Seljuk period. The İzmir Demiryolları Müzesi is worth a visit, and there is even a children's museum in İzmir, which has something for all ages, plus a theme park. 

Interesting landmarks

Kemeraltı is a lively market district where you are sure to find a typical Turkish gift or food item. Catch a show at The Ahmed Adnan Saygun Arts Center or relax and unwind at the Fes Pab Bath public baths' Fes Pab Bath. Lastly, take a stroll down the popular Love Road Alsancak. Seek out the Tree of the republic statue found at the charming Gündoğdu Square. Küçük Park attracts a relatively younger crowd with urban shops, bars, cafes and individual boutique shops.

Green spaces

Great for a picnic and observing the wildlife the İnciraltı City Forest ideally situated at the gulf of Izmir. Experience the local wildlife in the designated Izmir Birds Paradise, bird watching viewing station with incredible views across the water and interesting birds to spy. 

On the outer skirts of the city is Hasanağa Bahçesi park, which is the perfect spot for jogging, walking and escaping the noise of the city. Mount Sipylus, steeped in legend and within a national park, is a great space to escape the city and be amongst nature with fabulous views across the surrounding areas. Yamanlardag natural park is ideal for camping and hiking with the Yamanlar mountain a focal point to tackle. Çiçekli Tabiat Parkı national reserve is a 20-minute drive out of the city, and another favoured place for rambling and hiking.

Homeros Valley is another walking destination, through a valley as the name might suggest. Kara lake is stunning and peaceful, take a picnic and soak in the atmosphere at the designated camping area but be warned there are no facilities nearby. Alternatively take a boat trip to the beautiful Yassica island and Karantina island, to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Kids Activities

Kids will love a day at the Gumuldur Yali Castle aquapark or the Aqua city park; both offer pools and slides and good on-site facilities.

Lunapark Büyükpark has a kids playground, with plenty of places to sit as well as a decent cafe. For a real adventure, why not visit the Izmir wildlife park, which is a large zoo with a children's play area.
