One of the most visited cities in the southern hemisphere, Rio de Janeiro is famous for its laidback beach culture, the towering Christ the Redeemer statue that watches over the city, and, of course, Carnival! This world-renowned festive event takes place each February, and is widely acknowledged as the biggest party on earth.

If you are heading to Rio especially for Carnival, not only should be sure to book your flights and hotel as far in advance as possible, but you should also make absolutely sure you have your airport transfer sorted in advance, as this time of year, the airport and the city become extremely crowded.

However, there is plenty to enjoy in the city of Rio without the heady madness of Carnival. From the Corcovado mountain, to Sugar Loaf mountain - just five miles away from world famous Copacabana beach - there is more natural glory than you can imagine. For those who like their city breaks urban, though, you'd be hard pushed to find a better city for football than Rio. If you're fortunate enough to be in town for a game, a visit to the Maracana Stadium is simply a once-in-a-lifetime experience for any true footie fan! And speaking of sport, the 2016 Olympics is not far off, either!

Check out the affluent Sao Conrado, with its mansions and wealthy neighbourhoods on the side of the Pedra de Gravea mountain, to see the contrast between this and the impoverished favelas which make up much of the city's neighbourhoods. The divide between rich and poor in Rio is particularly striking, although you'll be relieved to hear that crime has dropped dramatically in the city in recent years. Some of the favelas are even considered safe enough for tourists to access, although you'd be well advised to check in advance.

Nonetheless, you could do much worse than simply to bask on the beautiful sandy beaches with the bronzed bodies to the sound of samba with a cocktail in hand!

Whichever way you plan to enjoy Rio de Janeiro, you are certain to have a truly memorable holiday in one of the most vibrant and dynamic cities you will ever experience...
