Things to do in Chamonix

One of the top attractions in Chamonix, at any time of the year, is the Aiguille du Midi. This huge peak, which emerges from the Mont Blanc massif, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Alps -  You can easily visit its top via the cable car, just be sure to dress warm!

Next up on the list of incredible natural sights is the Mer de Glace, or ‘Sea of Ice’. It’s the largest glacier in France, running 7km down the side of Mont Blanc. Take the Train du Montenvers, followed by a cable car into the glacier and the ice cave (Grotte de Glace).

Chamonix is more than just ice and snow. Discover a little more about day to day life with a visit to the Musée Alpin, or alpine museum. Here you can find out about the history of farming in the area, the development of tourism and more about the natural surroundings.

Winter Activities

Even in the winter, there’s much more to Chamonix than just skiing and snowboarding. Some of the other exciting, seasonal activities include snowshoeing, husky sledding and ice climbing. Ever wanted to try out being a mountain explorer? Simply join a professional guide who will lead you up a frozen waterfall; no experience needed, and all the necessary equipment is provided.

For something a little different, and not usually associated with winter, try out fat biking - Ideal for discovering the snowy winter trails, the studded tyres offer grip for exploring the surrounding winter wonderland. Alternatively, try a discovery walk, food tasting tour or photography visit of the area.

Summer Activities

If you know Chamonix as a ski resort, then you may never have considered visiting during the summer. And yet, this alpine town is stunning during the warmer months, with plenty of reasons to visit and lots of things to do. The main appeal lies in the hundreds of miles of hiking trails, all in excellent condition. Walkers can choose the lower, less taxing trails down in the valleys and enjoy the forest paths. Or, you can work up a sweat on the mountains, with the reward of incredible views.

You can also explore the mountain paths by mountain bike; take the easy route to the top with a ski lift, before whizzing downhill at speed or alternatively try one of the adventure parks where you’ll find high ropes courses and treetop activities suitable for the whole family.

Don’t forget, there’s more to Chamonix than just mountains. Water sports, such as canyoning, hydrospeeding and white water rafting, are a great way to get some adrenaline pumping. Alternatively, for something a little more laid-back, the Chamonix Valley is a paradise for anyone who loves fishing.

When to go?

Since Chamonix is such a great destination all year round, it’s easier to say when you should avoid visiting. February is a very popular time of year for French holiday makers as it coincides with the French school holidays - As a result, prices are higher and queues are longer. July and August are also very busy months, although this is offset by the huge availability of summer activities.

March is very popular for British tourists, but if you make sure you’re wrapped up warm enough for the cold then January is also an excellent time to visit. The pistes are quieter and the cold weather is great for good snow conditions.

Types of HolidayTaxis transfer vehicles
March 31, 2023

At HolidayTaxis, we recognize that every traveler is different and may have their own preferences and requirements for their airport transfers. To accommodate this, we offer a diverse range of transfer vehicles for our customers to choose from, each with its own set of benefits and advantages.

For example, if you're traveling in a large group, our minibus or shared airport shuttle transfers might be the best option for you, as they can comfortably accommodate a larger number of passengers and their luggage. On the other hand, if you're traveling with just one or two companions, a private car may be more suitable for you as they offer a more intimate and personalised experience.
