What to do in León?

The university city of León has a high number of significant historic buildings to visit, most with entrance fee between €5-10. The most renowned of architectural delights the city has to offer is the Santa Maria de León Cathedral, the largest in Spain; Hailed as a gothic masterpiece, with magnificent stained glass and architectural details. Take a tour of La Basilica De San Isidoro De Leon museum where you will find the tombs of kings, 11th-century frescoes with sacred and secular themes, as well as old handwritten Bibles.

If you are a lover of Gaudi, then you may well recognise the features of the Museo Gaudi Casa Botines, not least the internal, stairs, door and tower details. Another museum worth a visit, particularly for those interested in the Roman Empire is the Centro de Interpretacion Del Leon Romano. The striking 100-metre facade of the Antiguo Convento de San Marcos, a 15 min walk from the old town, is another gem of the city. A converted monastery, then a pilgrim hostel for those walking the Camino Trail and now a five-star hotel.

There are several pleasant squares in León, great for people watching and tucking into local Tapas and refreshments. The Plaza San Martin is a small, peaceful square, lined with reasonably priced cafes and restaurants, as well as some brightly coloured buildings. The large and lively, Plaza Mayor de Leon, has some beautiful architecture including the town hall, plus the usual eateries, and weekly markets selling local produce and garments. Much humbler in comparison is the Plaza Del Grano, with its cobbled stones, pretty church, and water fountain. This charming square is less touristy and full of character, you may even spot a pilgrim with a backpack and walking poles, as the Camino de Santiago route passes through here.
