But there’s more to this town than just surfing and days at the beach. Bentota offers its visitors beautiful natural surroundings, ancient temples, great street food and a low-key atmosphere.
Of course, if you’re looking for sun, sea and sand then you’ve come to the right place. A perfect stretch of golden sand, backed by coconut trees and lush foliage, is made better by the lack of overdevelopment. You’ll find a good few activities waiting for you, however, from banana boat rides to surf schools and jet ski hire. Spend your days off the beach exploring the nearby jungle with a guide, where you might see tree frogs, crocodiles and eagles. Or stop off at the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery to see baby turtles being released into the wild.

One of the best events in the area is the Bentota beach festival, which takes place around March. It’s a lively event with live music, DJs, cocktails and beach sports.
If you’re looking to explore more of the area, take a boat excursion along the Bentota Ganga for some wildlife watching amongst the mangroves, pay a visit to the Buddhist Galapota Temple or discover the Brief Gardens, former home of Sri Lankan artist Bevis Bawa.
