Diving around Sharm El Sheikh

Egypt is a holiday paradise from its wondrous pyramids and famous Bedouin markets, to its beaches and first-class diving sites; there is something to please everyone. Sharm el-Sheikh is one of the world's top diving destinations and is home to the incredible Thistlegorm wreck dive site, while the Jolanda reef dive site (another popular spot), is located within the Ras Mohammed Marine Park. 

Another prime dive location is the Straits of Tiran, with masses of fish and shark sightings, as well as the wreck of Lara, while Sinai's most infamous dive site (and suitable for snorkelling) is the Blue Hole. Other exciting dive sites include Dunraven Dive Site, Gardens Dive Site and the Thomas Reef dive site.

Other things to do around Sharm El Sheikh

Egypt is a popular beach holiday for families due to the excellent facilities; one of Sharm el-Sheikh's best beaches is Ras Um Sid, where there is a magnificent reef for snorkelling and beginners diving. Naama Bay is rated the best beach area with ample sun-shades and loungers, a pedestrian-only promenade, plus plentiful cafes, restaurants and souvenir stores - The ultimate sun-bathers paradise. Head further north and Shark's Bay is a more exclusive location with five-star resorts and hotels, plus Soho Square Center which features some top-quality shops, cafes and restaurants.

The Ras Mohammed National Park, situated on a peninsula, is surrounded by stunning beaches; most notably Aqaba Beach and Old Quay Beach, plus there is a Shark Observatory cliff top with views across both sides of the Red Sea. For a more laid-back 'hippie' vibe visit Dahab, which is a popular backpacker resort with chilled out restaurants, cafes and an eclectic shopping district. 

Hike to the summit of Mt Sinai for beautiful orange-hued peaks. At the foot of Mt Sinai is the Peninsulas top historic destination 'St Catherine's Monastery' a must-see for history lovers as it's the oldest working monastery in the world and contains a thrilling museum. Take a day trip to the Coloured Canyon, a showcase of mineral-rich rock formations brushed with orange and red hues; a natural beauty to behold in the desert. Nabq Protectorate is a rugged landscape along the coast with the world's most northerly mangrove forest including sand dunes, birdlife and deserted beaches.

How far is Hurghada from Sharm El Sheikh?

If you take a ferry across from Sharm El Sheikh to Hurghada, the journey takes around 2 hours. Otherwise, you can take a taxi around the Gulf of Suez which takes approximately 9 hours and 45 minutes, with a distance of 52 miles (83.7 km).
