What to do in Carcassonne?

The medieval hilltop town of Carcassonne is a tourist hot spot. From afar the town looks like something from a fairytale, with impressive high walls stretching 3km around the old upper city. First built in the 15th century and restored in the 1800s, these ancient walls include 52 towers and house endless winding alleyways and old stone buildings within. The church, Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsus, mixes Romanesque and Gothic design seamlessly while showcasing intricate stained glass dating back to 1280.

The Bastide de Saint-Louis, built outside La Cité walls, is mostly devoid of tourists. It boasts the Fountain of Neptune in the centre of the square, amid local french restaurants, cafes and access to high street shops. The Carcassonne Cathedral, in the lower city, was restored in the 1800s and is an excellent example of Gothic architecture with splendid features including a rose window. The Musée des Beaux-Arts, Carcassonne's fine art museum, showcases French art from the 1600s to the 1900s. You could also take a barge trip along the Canal du Midi which runs along the north of the lower town.
