What to do in Nantes

Situated in western France, approximately 31 miles from the Atlantic coast, Nantes is France's sixth largest city. With plenty of sights and attractions, there is enough to please even the most hard-to-please holidaymakers with a trip to Nantes. The city is the birthplace of famous French author Jules Verne, often considered the father of science fiction. Visitors can find out more about his life and writing at the Jules Verne Museum.

Alternatively, pay a visit to the fascinating and unusual Les Machines de l’Île. Located on the western side of the Île de Nantes, an island of land in the centre of the Loire river, it is inhabited by giant animatronic creatures that have been inspired by the work of Leonardo da Vinci and Jules Verne. The main attraction is the 12-metre tall Grand Elephant, which can carry 52 passengers on its back.

For some more traditional French culture, pay a visit to the Chateau des Ducs de Bretagne. Dating back to the very early 1200s, this attractive castle can be found in the centre of the city and is now home to the Nantes History Museum. Other cultural attractions include the Cathédrale de Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul and the Theatre Graslin.
