What to expect when you arrive at Pamplona Airport?

What to do in Pamplona?

Pamplona, also known as Basque Iruña, is the capital of both the province and autonomous community of Navarra, It lies on the western bank of the Arga River in the region of La Cuenca.

Pamplona is most famous for its annual bull run named ‘San Fermin’; participants dressed in the uniform white clothes with red neckerchiefs run along the Calle de la Estafeta’ alongside bulls. Despite ongoing protests by animal rights activists, Bullfights are protected as part of the country’s cultural heritage under the Spanish Constitution. Pamplona also has many historical draws and is also known to be one of Spains greenest cities.

Famous landmarks in Pamplona Spain

Plaza del Castillo, which is lined with cafes and bars, is an ideal spot to relax and re-charge, any time of day it’s always full of energy. Located in the square is Café Iruña, which is famed for being the location where Ernest Hemingways wrote his ‘the sun also rises’ prose.

Plaza de Toros de Pamplona is another busy spot and where the bull run route ends, close to the main square. The bull ring is large and colourful and definitely worth a visit en route seek out the Monumento al Encierro, which is a nearby statue depicting the running of the bulls.

Plaza Consistorial is dominated by the Town Hall, with its fantastic baroque facade, which can get busy but there is nothing else here of any note for tourists. 

Portal de Francia is what remains of the entrance to Pamplona city; there are an old drawing bridge and a King Charles V coat of arms. A great introduction to the city, with beautiful views of the Arga river and an enjoyable walk around the towering walls.

Historical buildings in Pamplona Spain 

Take a tour around the Catedral de Pamplona which was built over the remains of a Romanesque church, during the 14th and 15th centuries. Iglesia de Capuchinos San Antonio, located in the centre, has an impressive apse and presbytery. Iglesia de Santo Domingo, well hidden behind the Town hall in Plaza consistorial, is a 16th-century baroque church connected to the Camino de Santiago pilgrims route. Catedral de Santa María is a mix of gothic and Romanesque design and displays lovely examples of medieval works of art.

Iglesia de San Saturnino, in the centre of the old historic quarter, this church is gothic in style and was once the site of two churches, it has some intricate carvings over the main entrance. 

Iglesia de San Nicolas dates back to the 12th century and was built as both a church and military defence; an example of which is the one remaining watchtower and the extremely thick walls. San Lorenzo Church located on the edge of the historic centre is home to the chapel of San Fermin, the much-admired saint, whose sculpture is housed inside and is paraded during the bull run.

The Planetarium, built in 1993, has one of the largest dome of its kind in the world, a fascinating place to visit for those interested in astronomy.

Iglesia de San Ignacio Capilla de Adoracion Perpetua is open 24 hours a day and is the place where the adventurer of the same name is worshipped for having defended the city of Pamplona.

Museo Universidad de Navarra, designed by renowned architect Rafael Moneo, is an impressive building architecturally. Teatro Gayarre, situated on Avenida Carlos III, is an old theatre with bags of character which holds concerts and other performances. 

Museo Oteiza (Alzuza) is located in the town of Alzuza, a 10-kilometre drive from the city is home to the work of Jorge Oteiza, a celebrated Basque sculptor and besides has terrific views of Pamplona city in the distance. 

Green Spaces

Parque de La Taconera is a lovely park to visit in the centre of the city, beautifully landscaped with a huge array of wildlife and benches for seating, you may even spot a peacock if you’re lucky.

Take a stroll and enjoy magnificent views of the city at Parque Fluvial del Arga where you are likely to happen upon local dog walkers and joggers.

Parque de La Media Luna is very green and leafy, and with its elevated position offers more great views over Pamplona. The park has sculptures and water features and is a short walk from the city centre, take a picnic and get away from the bustling city for some quiet time.

Escape the city for the day and enjoy the Parque Natural Urbasa Andia. A two-hour journey by car but worth it if you are a lover of the great outdoors. This vast open, rugged area offers ideal walks, mountain biking, and hiking within a beautiful valley alongside cattle and wild horses. 

Shopping within Pamplona Spain

The unique chocolate shop named Garrarte Artesanos is full of hand-sculpted treats, which are both visually pleasing and incredibly tasty. If you like glass, then you must visit the shop combined with a workshop of Agustin Aguirre, which is home to a fantastic choice of jewellery, lamps and various cut glass decorative items. 

Another individual store selling handmade candles and pasta, as well as other things, is the Confiteria Cereria Donezar, with its inviting window display you are sure to be enticed inside to leave with a traditional Spanish piece. A hidden gem in Pamplona, found in the old town is MÁGINA which sells a vast array of cooking oils, rated as some of the best in the world. If fine wine and cookery is your thing, then we also recommend the shop named Honestus, which also sells oils, cheeses and sausages of the finest quality with friendly, knowledgeable staff on hand to advise and assist.

Mercado Ensanche, with its traditional Spanish facade, is a lovely local market selling all kinds of vegetables, fruits, fish and meat of good quality and moderately priced. Behind the town hall is another reasonably large supermarket, selling everything you could need, including a good selection of cheeses.

La Morea is a vast shopping centre which contains endless shops, supermarkets, choice restaurants and even a cinema. It’s a slight drive out of town, but the set up is very good with wide walkways, spacious and clean, with plenty of parking.

Nightlife within Pamplona Spain 

Being a university city Pamplona is vibrant and lively with lots of late-night bars to grab a tapas and clubs for dancing. Recommended tapas eateries are Cerveceria La Estafeta located on Calle Estafeta, which is quick service and good food, while Cafe Roch, on Calle Comedias,

is known for its unbeatable skewers and fried food. If you are after a large bar, with a decent range of beers then try Dublin house on Av. de Pío XII, it also does a great gin and tonic and gets busy.
