Things to do in San Juan

San Juan dates back to the early 1500s, making it the second oldest European settlement in the Americas. Do a self-guided tour of the historical sights, or take a guided walking tour to find out more about the local history.

Puerto Rico is well known for its coffee, so if you’re a coffee lover be sure to try some of the local beans and start your day at one of the many cafes. After breakfast, pay a visit to the outdoor art galleries, which you will find all over the island. Or try some souvenir shopping. You’ll find everything from clothes and jewellery to gifts to art and crafts at the boutiques, especially around Calle San Sebastian.

Puerto Rico is also known for being a great place for a party, and no matter what time of year you visit you’re sure to find a festival in full swing somewhere. San Juan is particularly lively in the winter months, January and February, when the 4 day San Sebastian (or ‘Sanse’) festival takes place. Expect plenty of dancing, parades, music and food.

It would be a shame to visit such a beautiful part of the world without seeing some scenery, so why not take a day to discover Puerto Rico’s natural attractions. Take a day trip to Vieques to the El Yunque Rainforest, a subtropical rainforest with beautiful trails, stunning waterfalls and exotic plants and animals. Or explore beneath the waves by snorkelling or scuba diving in Culebra.
