Things to do

Montserrat is a well-known mountain range near the capital city of Barcelona and is home to some stunning geography, beautiful historical buildings and lots of hiking and walking opportunities.

The main peaks here are Sant Jeroni, Montgrós and Miranda de les Agulles, and visitors will find a range of routes and trails to choose from if they’re looking to explore. It’s also one of the most popular spots for climbing in Spain, but especially in Catalonia. October is a good time to visit if you’re looking to do some outdoor activities, when the weather is warm and dry but cooler than in the summer.

Visitors can also take the funicular train or the ‘Aeri de Montserrat’ cable car to discover more of the area. Sightseeing includes the chapel of Santa Cova, the pretty route of Camí dels Degotalls, which takes visitors through beautiful trees and grassy areas. There’s also a market selling typical Catalan products, such as oils, honey and cheeses, and the Montserrat Museum.

The most popular attraction is the Monastery of Santa María de Montserrat. This Benedictine monastery attractions thousands of visitors due to is fantastic surroundings and the beautiful building itself. If you enjoy music, check to see when the Escolania de Montserrat choir will be performing. Made up of 14 year olds, it’s one of the oldest choirs in Spain and is a symbol of Montserrat.

Best restaurants

There are only two restaurants in Montserrat so it is best to plan ahead if you are looking to eat out. The Abat Cisneros restaurant is a small, intimate restaurant so worth booking in advance.
