Things to see and do in Zell Am See

No matter what time of year you decide to visit, Zell Am See is an attractive place to spend a holiday. Start your stay with a relaxed stroll around town, where you’ll find souvenirs in the local shops and pretty architecture to look at. Lake Zell is one of the main attractions, and there is a footpath the whole way around if you’d like to explore, with plenty of cafes and places to stop along the way. In the evening you can enjoy the Magic Lake Show, a mix of music and lights that starts around 10pm.

If you’re looking for activities for the whole day, take a walk to the Pilcher Farm where you can do a tour before enjoying a lunch of locally produced cheese and meat. For day trips, try the pretty village of Berchtesgaden, where you’ll find museums, little churches and a glacial river. Most famously, it is the location of Hitler’s famous Eagle’s Nest. You can also take a taxi to the nearby city of Salzburg.

Winter activities

Skiing is what Zell Am See is best known for, but if you’re looking for a break from the slopes or you’re not a keen skier then there are plenty of other things to do. Snowboarding is an alternative option, as is tobogganing. For something a little slower-paced, why not try snowshoeing. Or shake things up with a night time skiing session on the Schmitten Nightslope, a floodlit section of the piste.

Some great family-friendly winter activities include animal feeding at Thumersbach, where young animal lovers can meet the deer, goats, sheep and cows. Or take a fairytale ride through the winter wonderland on the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn narrow gauge railway.

Summer activities

A great tip for getting the most out of your summer stay in Zell Am See is by purchasing the Zell am See-Kaprun Summer Card. With this you enjoy multiple benefits, such as unlimited use of the Schmittenhöhe cable car, a boat trip on Lake Zell, unlimited entry to various pools and lakeside bathing beaches, use of the Kaprun Gletscher gondola and entry to various parks and museums.

There are plenty of opportunities for hiking and cycling, with mountain bike and e-bike available to hire. Or enjoy a relaxing round of golf while taking in the alpine scenery.
