Things to do in Vilnius

The capital of Lithuania is an interesting place to visit for its culture, history and art. Some of the most popular sights include Vilnius Cathedral and Bell Tower, symbolic of the city. Take a tour of its beautiful interiors before visiting the crypt and the royal mausoleum. Also on your must-visit list is the neighbourhood of Uzupis. Here you’ll find the artsy, bohemian heart of the city, full of colourful street art, little cafes, art shops and restaurants. It also leads to Gediminas’ Castle, which is backed by attractive parks and wooded areas.

Discover some of the city’s past with a visit to the Museum of Genocide Victims, which often features on lists of recommended places to see. The former KGB office and prison houses exhibits explaining this sad part of Lithuania’s history. Finish your day at one of the local breweries where you can taste one of the many Lithuanian beers, or some traditional mead.

Top attractions

The remaining tower of Gediminas’ Castle is the best known landmark in the city. Take the walk up the hill to the tower, from where you can admire the views of the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The one remaining city gate is also well worth a look. Part of a wall that formerly surrounded Vilnius, the Gates of Dawn (as it is known) is also a shrine that houses a small chapel and a gold icon of the Virgin Mary.

If you have time for a day trip during your stay, take a taxi to visit Trakai Island Castle. Located 17 miles west of the city, this island is part of a collection that are dotted around lake Galvė. The old town of Trakai is a popular place to visit for both locals and tourists, keen to see the picturesque landscapes and Trakai Castle.

Best restaurants

For a real taste of old-world Lithuanian cuisine, head to Lokys Restaurant. Housed in a 15th century merchant building, it offers up a menu of hunter’s soup, roast boar, and mushroom and pumpkin dishes. Ertlio Namas restaurant is a great alternative for traditional food with a modern twist, and has a four or six-course tasting menu for diners looking for a special meal. Gaspar’s Restaurant is popular for its international cuisine, with everything from halloumi salads to duck dishes, and Aline Leiciai is a good eatery for a laid-back meal accompanied by the famous Lithuanian mead.
