Santo Domingo, often called ‘La Capital’, is a vibrant mix of culture, history, fine dining, and busy city life. Although a very urban city, it has plenty to offer visitors - including old colonial architecture, nightlife, museums, and beaches.

City highlights include the Zona Colonial (Ciudad Colonial), the historic central neighborhood home to the oldest cathedral in the Americas - the UNESCO-protected Catedral Primada de América - and the Fortaleza Ozama - the oldest European fortress still standing. The Parque Colón, a square right in the heart of the old town, is a top spot for your morning coffee at one of the many cafes. From here, you can easily visit the Alcázar de Colón, a UNESCO World Heritage site and former home of the son Christopher Columbus.

If you have time for more sightseeing, check out the Museum of the Royal Houses, the National Pantheon, and the Plaza de España, where you’ll find a choice of restaurants. If you get tired of the city center, the best and closest beaches are Juan Dolio and Guayacanes. Here you can enjoy the sun in a sun lounger, swim in the sea or spend your evening in one of the beach restaurants.
