What to do in Yangon

Yangon is the capital of the Yangon region of Myanmar, and is the country's largest city. Whatever brings you to this unique and most cosmopolitan part of Asia, you can be sure of a simply unforgettable trip.

No trip would be complete without a visit to the iconic Shwedagon Pagoda, a huge gold-covered monument believed to house Buddha relics. Burmese pagodas are one of the country’s main sights, and many can be found throughout the city where they may contain sacred texts or be places of meditation. The other famous pagodas in Yangon include Sule Pagoda, Chauk Htet Kyi Pagoda and Swal Taw Pagoda. Not far from here is Kandawgyi Lake and Karaweik Palace. The final monument on your list of must-see places is Kyauk Taw Gyi temple, where you will find an image of Buddha covered in white marble.

One of the most typical things to do in Myanmar is visit a tea house. Tea is a staple in the Burmese diet, both as a drink and as an ingredient in food. Try one of the friendly street-side tea houses during your stay. You can also enjoy a drink around Botahtaung harbour, a lively place at any time of the day, or go shopping for souvenirs and gifts at the Bogyoke market (Scott’s market)
