Where is Tromso Airport?

Tromsø Airport (TOS), is an international airport located in the city of Tromsø, on the west coast of the island of Tromsøya.

Things to do

Visitors to this part of northern Norway are usually attracted by the country’s beautiful nature, its fjords, and the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights. For an authentic experience, book a stay at the Aurora Camp, where you can stay in a traditional Sami tent. Your stay also includes dog sledding through the snow-covered landscape and the chance of spotting the Aurora Borealis. Whether or not you manage to spot them, you can find out more about the incredible natural phenomenon at Spaceship Aurora, an educational visitor centre based at the Andøya Space Center.

There are plenty of other activities and outdoor experiences to try during your stay in Tromso. Why not take a fishing tour, which allows you to fish on a glacier through the ice. One of the best locations for this is Kvaløya Island, thanks to its stunning scenery. Or, if you’re visiting in the summer, get out among the glaciers with a guided kayaking tour. For the very best views, take the Fjellheisen cable car to the top of Mount Storsteinen which overlooks Tromso, offering panoramic views. Don’t forget to visit Tromsø Botaniske Hage, the most northerly botanic gardens in the world, to see some of the local plant life and flowers.

Top attractions in Tromso

You can’t visit Tromso without taking a boat tour of a Tromsø Fjord. This breathtaking landscape of frozen seas and glaciers is well worth a day trip, and the best way to see it is with a professional tour guide on a small cruise trip.

Two of the most famous buildings in the city are the Arctic Cathedral (Tromsøysund kirke) in Tromsdalen Valley, and Polaria, and exhibition hall dedicated to the surrounding wildlife and habitats. The cathedral is a key landmark in the city and is an interesting place to visit to see some Nordic architecture and find out some more about the local history. Polaria will be especially popular with families, and contains an Arctic aquarium with seals and fish, a cinema and interactive displays.

Best restaurants

If you’re looking to try some traditional Norwegian food, head to the upstairs-downstairs restaurant that contains both Emma's Drømmekjøkken and Emma's Under. On the upper floor, you’ll find a refined restaurant serving the best quality ingredients and catering to more selective diners. Underneath is a laid-back, cosy eatery serving local specialities such as braised reindeer and fish gratin.

Long-standing favourite Fiskekompaniet is your go-to restaurant for seafood and fish and is located on the waterfront of the port. All the starters and mains are fish-based, contemporary dishes served in a classy setting. Alternatively, if you’re looking for something a little more down-to-earth, Dragøy is a top spot for fish and chips, fish burgers and homemade ravioli at an excellent price.
