What to do in La Coruña?

La Coruña is a port city, known locally in Galicia as A Coruña. The Tower of Hercules (Torre de Hercules) €3 entrance fee, is a fully functioning Roman lighthouse and UNESCO world heritage site. It’s a decent walk and climb up narrow steps, but vistas from the top are very rewarding. Take a picnic, or treat yourself at the Michelin star restaurant found at the Monte de San Pedro park. The green fields and lush landscape are still home to old WWII coastal defence remnants. Take the glass elevator up, or walk, for impressive views across the city and coast.

A great spot to take lunch and people watch is in the vast square named Plaza de Maria Pita, a short walk from the port. Whilst the white metal and glass-fronted facade of the Avenida de la Marina, overlooking the harbour, is quite a sight to behold due to its quantity, size and mirror effect in the sunshine. The castle of San Anton, a well-maintained fort, was once a prison and is now home to the Archaeological and historical museum. La Coruña has a large beach, within a bay, with a mix of sand and rock, named Playa de Riazor, the ideal location to relax and unwind.

Catch a glimpse of seals and be educated on local marine life at the modest yet informative Aquarium Finisterrae. Kids are bound to be entertained at the interactive museum named Domus, despite being solely in Spanish and French, it’s a uniquely engaging way to educate children priced at 2€ entrance fee. Another interactive museum is the Casa de las Ciencias, in the leafy Parque de Santa Margarita. Both a science museum and planetarium, the octagonal building in itself, is a striking architectural feature within pleasant surroundings.

Lugo, also in the region of Galicia, is a city with a strong historical past, with an impressive 10 metre high Roman walls, Roman baths and bridge. In the centre of the ancient city is the Catedral de Lugo, with a beautiful altar and serene interior. Nearby is the Museo Provincial de LugoCastro de Viladonga, set in a beautiful former convent with incredible Galician artwork and Celtic jewellery. At the heart of Lugo, in the old city, is the superbly landscaped Plaza Mayor, home to the clock tower and town hall.
