Things to do in Rhodes – The best holiday activities

When planning your trip to Rhodes there are multiple different types of holiday activities that can be enjoyed as a family, as a couple, or even if you are traveling on your own. These range from visiting historical ruins to finding the best Greek restaurants and wine tours on this beautiful island.

Rhodes has centuries of ruins and historical sites dating back from the 5th and 6th century BC that are still preserved today after the numerous amounts of national disasters that have occurred over the years. The medieval city is one of the best-preserved sites in Greece and is a must-visit in the old town of Rhodes.

Due to the history of Rhodes, there are a variety of historical periods and many different identities, cultures, and architectures that are identified within this little Greek island.

Visit the Acropolis of Lindos in Rhodes

The Acropolis of Lindos is an impressive and captivating archaeological site of Rhodes that has one of the best dramatic natural landscapes on the island. It is situated on the top of the hill with the iconic fishing village Lindos below. This village is a former municipality which is a lower level of government. This village is the main destination of Rhodes for any tourist due to its white-washed walls and cobbled streets.

Within the village of Lindos, there is The Church of the Panayia which was repaired in 1489. You can to this day still walk in and pay to visit the church however you are not allowed to take any photos when you are inside as it is a sacred place and this is frowned upon.

If you choose to walk around Lindos village there are many souvenir stores and rooftop restaurants to spend your time relaxing and sauntering the cobbled streets. There is even an option to hire a donkey to get you back up to the top of the hill once you have experienced the wonders of Lindos.

Ancient Kamiros in Rhodes

Rhodes is known for its ruins and this is one of the oldest on the island. These ruins came to light during the period of Italian rule (1912-1943). After the great earthquake of 227/6 BC that destroyed most of the village that was situated here, it is believed that no one was harmed due to the evidence that the villagers had already moved on to the city of Rhodes when this earthquake happened.

Medieval City of Rhodes

Within the old town of Rhodes lies the Medieval city that 6000 people still to this day live within the walls of. This city is protected by a mote and was constructed around 1309 to 1523. Within the Medieval city, you can find The Streets of the Knights, a beautifully preserved street with very slippery cobbled roads due to the many years of erosion from horses and tourists.

Just down from this renowned street sits the Palace of the Grand Master. With 12m thick walls this palace was the main defense, scattered around the Palace were huge granite cannonballs that were used against the Turks when defending Rhodes Island.

Within the Medieval city, there are many fun activities to try such as a cooking and wine tasting class, as well as experiencing the seeing the whole city on segways with a tour guide. There are truly many ways to experience the wonderful city of Rhodes that will become one of your best memories yet.

Butterfly Valley in Rhodes

If you are searching for a magical moment when visiting Rhodes, the Butterfly Valley is a must-visit. Between the months of May and September, a flutter of butterflies fills up every inch of this valley. This unique nature reserve is one of their most famous attractions due to how magical and serene it is when walking around.

If you are looking for a relaxing day out in the shade the Butterfly Valley gives a relaxing atmosphere due to the flowing water and swaying branches. This magical valley is only 10km from the airport and 25km from the city of Rhodes.

Experience 1000s of butterflies attracted to the Oriental Sweetgum trees that cover the whole valley and paired with the sound of running water. Walk along the bridges to explore this incredible tranquil experience. It is also a great attraction if you are looking for something different with some shade in Rhodes.

Monastery of Filerimos

The Monastery of Filerimos in Rhodes is situated on a hill above lalyssos and located around 10km from Rhodes town. This monastery is unique from the other monasteries due to the constructed Gothic style of the Byzantine monastery.

Built in the 15th century by the Knights of Saint John who had conquered the island of Rhodes at the time. It is thought that they took with them the holy icon of the Virgin Mary but if you walk up one path of the hill you can see an amazing view and the huge cross on the other side of the path.
