Things to do in Lausanne

Start your holiday in the attractive city of Lausanne with a walk around the centre, exploring the Old Town streets, the medieval Cité and the up and coming Flon district. Not to worry if you’re not keen on walking all those hills, there are bridges, escalators and lifts to help you get around. Take the steps of the Escaliers du Marché down to the main square (Place de la Palud) where you can admire the town hall and stop for a coffee.

Indulge in some shopping and take in some culture during your stay; The Art Brut gallery offers a different experience to your usual museum, where artwork is made by prisoners or other people on the fringes of society. If you’re looking for some souvenirs, head to the Wednesday or Saturday markets which line the streets of Rue de Bourg and the main square. Here you’ll find everything from fruit and vegetables, to books, antiques and many more interesting finds. Designer boutiques can be found in Flon or along Rue Marterey, while the best Swiss artisan chocolate can be bought at Blondel.

Spend some time outside during your stay, with a walk through the Jardins Botaniques (botanical garden). Alternatively, explore the natural surroundings in the Sauvabelin forest, or see more of the wine growing region with a tour of the Lavaux vineyards.

Top attractions in Lausanne

The top places to visit include the Cathédrale de Notre Dame, perhaps the very best cathedral in Switzerland; this impressive Gothic building dates back to the 13th century, and can be found in the Old Town.

A more modern sight to see in Lausanne is the Aquatis Aquarium & Vivarium; a striking and cutting-edge new building which showcases water environments from around the world. For sports-lovers, the Olympic Museum is well worth a visit, where you can see the Olympic Torches of all the Games ever played, athletic equipment from former winners, plus an interactive exhibition area.

Finally, you couldn’t come to Lausanne without spending some time by Lake Geneva, and the Port of Ouchy is the best place to do this. The attractive promenade is a great place to spend an afternoon and even includes three different gardens. Should you find yourself here on Swiss National Day then you’re in for a treat as it’s the location of the biggest firework display. During the summer months, go swimming in the crystal clear waters of the lake, hire a SUP (stand-up paddleboard) or enjoy one of the many cafes and restaurants.

Best restaurants

Lausanne is known as a modern city, and the choice of restaurants here reflects that. Some of the best places to eat in Lausanne include Holy Cow, for its delicious gourmet burgers and artisanal beers, and Eat Me, a classy tapas bar with fun and inventive dishes. However, if you want to try something a little more traditional, then La Pinte Besson is the top spot for a cheese fondue, and Café Romand is a great place to try a range of authentic Swiss dishes.

Types of HolidayTaxis transfer vehicles
March 31, 2023

At HolidayTaxis, we recognize that every traveler is different and may have their own preferences and requirements for their airport transfers. To accommodate this, we offer a diverse range of transfer vehicles for our customers to choose from, each with its own set of benefits and advantages.

For example, if you're traveling in a large group, our minibus or shared airport shuttle transfers might be the best option for you, as they can comfortably accommodate a larger number of passengers and their luggage. On the other hand, if you're traveling with just one or two companions, a private car may be more suitable for you as they offer a more intimate and personalised experience.
